A radio show exploring the depths of musical traditions and variety of forms in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
In 2025, there is very much musical innovation in the Global South, very much exciting new urban, electronic music coming from the Global South in the new millenium: from South African Gqom to Indian Desibeats, from Saudi Arabian Samri to Brazillian Funk, from Tanzanian Lingeli to Palestinian Dabke. Besides external influences, each exciting new sound emerges from its own deep roots, sonic traditions as part of a social fabric with its own history, its own twists and turns of development.
Tri-Con Transmissions dives deep into African, Asian, and South American musical roots and traditions, its curation prioritising music for listening, selections which are uncompromising but universally beautiful, raw and inspiring — challenging and expanding, but sometimes also revealing the non-Western roots of mainstream Eurocentric musicality.
With such a big migrant population in Berlin, Tri-Con Transmissions is a show for Africans, Asians, and South Americans, as well as Europeans -- bridging musical gaps and making connections where none seemed to exist before — from the kalimba of the Khoi San to smaller gamelan ensembles deep in the forests of Indonesian islands, from Persian classical to Korean classical, from contemporary Saudi Arabian Samri to live Tanzanian Singeli.
